Here in Melbourne we’re blessed with a great restaurant scene. The quality of food is better than just about anywhere else in the world and you can find pretty much every type of grub you can think of.
According to at least one source we’ve also got the highest number of restaurants per capita in the world, which means it can be tough to choose where to go for a feed, particularly when you’re only here for a couple of days.
So, to save you the effort the TripFit team have put together a list of our current faves. In no particular order:
#italian #cbd #classic #pricey #bookahead
Italian for ‘the usual place’, it’s obvious why this is the go-to restaurant in Melbourne for high quality, classic Italian food. It’s open all day so you can get a great breakfast or lunch at Il Solito, but we recommend heading there for dinner and getting stuck into some tasty pasta and a nice bottle of red.
#australian #carlton #modern #pricey #bookahead
If you’re here from overseas and you want to sample modern Australian tucker, this is your place. The Town Mouse is a small, sleek space in Carlton (just north of Melbourne) with a small, sleek menu designed for sharing with someone you like. We ate ourselves silly and enjoyed every bite.
#vegetarian #abbotsford #cheap #paywhatyoulike #nobookings
The Abbotsford venue, set inside a convent, is one of four LAA restaurants in Melbourne and is our pick of the bunch, not least because it’s next to one of our favourite bike trails (the Capital City Trail). These guys serve delicious, no nonsense vegetarian food that you can eat in their canteen or take out into the convent gardens. You can eat as much as you like and pay whatever you think is fair, bearing in mind that all proceeds go towards feeding the homeless.
#asian #windsor #hawkerstyle #notcheap #nobookings
Melbourne has a massive Asian food scene and HH is one of the best examples of what’s on offer. As per the name, the food at Hawker Hall is inspired by the street food culture in South East Asia and while it’s not cheap, you won’t go away hungry or disappointed. It also has an outstanding selection of local and imported beers on tap to help wash down your tasty tucker.
#asian #cbd #dumplings #reaonablypriced #bookahead
Going for dumplings with your mates is a favourite tradition for most Melburnians, particularly after a few beers or vinos. HT is a great spot in town where you can get a good feed for under $25. Our favourite dish is the Wantons with Hot Chili Sauce. You can usually get a booking on the day except during the busy summer months and they have another venue in Prahran if you happen to be in that neck of the woods.
#pizza #albertpark #authentic #reasonablypriced #bookahead
Melbourne has more pizza joints than you can poke a stick of garlic bread at, but DOC is the pick of the bunch. There’s no hawaiian or bbq chicken here, just classic Italian style pizza with ingredients like truffle oil, grana padano and prosciutto di parma. They have three outlets in Melbourne and one a bit further out in Mornington that you might even get to try during one of our Mornington Peninsula Adventures.
#meat #richmond #americanstyle #notcheap #bookahead
This place can be best described as a shrine to the meat gods. If you enjoy tender pulled pork, succulent beef brisket or tasty burnt ends, we suggest you head to Meatmother now and prepare yourself for a serious case of the meat sweats. These guys also have a great selection of craft beers and make sure you try their famous bacon sour: served with a slice of bacon. Yes.
#burgers #cbd #americanstyle #reasonablypriced #nobookings
Barely a week goes by without a new burger joint opening in Melbourne. This one’s been around for a little while now but we like it for its great burgers, spiked shakes and quirky setting: a trailer park in the CBD (albeit an indoor trailer park on the first floor). They only take bookings for 8 or more so if you’re a smaller group get there early or else hang out by the bar until you get a spot.
Enjoy guys! And if you do get to one of these restaurants, be sure to get in touch to let us know what you thought.
